Procedure for Checking Race Engine Piston Pop-Up:

With the piston down in the cylinder bore, place bar above the piston the same direction as the wrist pin across the gasket surface.

Set-up a dial indicator to read directly on top of the bar at zero and rotate crankshaft so the piston will travel up to top dead center position (top of cylinder bore). If the piston come above the deck surface the dial indicator will show a reading representing the amount of piston pop-up above the gasket surface. If there is no movement on the dial indicator then the piston is below the gasket surface.

Piston depth below the gasket surface can be checked by placing a piece of shim material on top of the piston and repeating the above steps.

Example: With a .010 shim material on top of the piston and the dial indicator reading .003 then the difference means the piston is .007 below the gasket surface.
