Procedure for Checking Race Engine Piston Pop-Up:
With the piston down in
the cylinder bore, place bar above the piston the same direction as the wrist
pin across the gasket surface.
Set-up a dial indicator
to read directly on top of the bar at zero and rotate crankshaft so the piston
will travel up to top dead center position (top of cylinder bore). If the
piston come above the deck surface the dial indicator will show a reading
representing the amount of piston pop-up above the gasket surface. If there is
no movement on the dial indicator then the piston is below the gasket
Piston depth below the
gasket surface can be checked by placing a piece of shim material on top of the
piston and repeating the above steps.
Example: With a .010
shim material on top of the piston and the dial indicator reading .003 then the
difference means the piston is .007 below the gasket surface.
