John Moore is a gearhead. Always has been. From the age of 8, he tinkered with motors.  Go kart motors, minibike motors, lawn mower motors, car motors….  All to see what made the engines go.  And go fast.

His parents, Jack and Joan Moore, supported his obsession. When John was 12, his parents allowed him to work at their lawn and garden business, where they sold and serviced yard machines. They also sold Rupp go karts and minibikes. As competition from megastores encroached on their sales, Jack and Joan switched their focus to servicing and repairs. Often, a block would become unusable due to a small dent or scratch. Dismayed by the waste of throwing out an entire block due to a minor defect, Jack, a retired machinist from Newport News Shipbuilding, developed and built the E-Z Bore machine to refurbish the blocks. The E-Z Bore machine is a portable, lightweight unit which cuts the bore perfectly perpendicular to the crankshaft, improving engine performance and providing the motor greater longevity.  It leaves a perfectly smooth finish without the necessity of finish honing. Working with engineers from Briggs & Stratton, Jack perfected the machine and obtained a patent on the product in 1986.

Through connections with Briggs & Stratton and spurred on by John, Jack learned that there could be a big market for small engine modifications on the go kart scene. Together, they attended trade shows and set up displays at tracks to demonstrate the benefits of the E-Z Bore system. The machine became so popular that Jack and Joan closed their lawn and garden business and devoted their time to building and selling the machines from their home. Business was so good that they opened a retail location in 1987 in the Kiln Creek Center in Yorktown, Virginia, from which the business continues to operate. Because the vast majority of their customers were go kart racers, they began selling parts, karts, and servicing motors.

By this time, John was working full time in the automotive industry, first as a mechanic, and eventually as shop supervisor. He continued to help out at the kart shop, tweaking motors for the racers. Together, they continued developing tools for working on small motors.  He left the automotive industry in 1995 to work full time at the kart shop.

Jack and John designed and built around 40 specialty tools.  Among the companies for which they designed products are Kohler Engines, NASA and DaimlerChrysler.

In 1997, Jack and Joan decided it was again time to retire. John bought out his parents and continues operating the company. He’s expanded the business to include online sales through an internal web store, and a store on eBay. He continues to support go kart racing, and has mentored several young drivers who have gone on to successful racing careers.

In 2012, sales of kart parts and accessories at the retail location were curtailed to allow John to devote time to his first passion - tool design and machine work. He plans to continue online sales of specialty kart fasteners and small engine tools.
